"With nearly 500 AP scholars this past year, I want to congratulate both students and teachers for this significant accomplishment," HPHS Principal Walter Kelly said. "These students have demonstrated the ability to successfully complete college-level coursework in multiple areas simultaneously, while they are high school students. The teachers have led this effort by finding developmentally appropriate ways to teach college material to high school students, which is evidence of skill and adaptability. Congratulations to both!"

The AP exams were administered in May 2019 to students in grades 9-12 who were enrolled across 32 different AP courses. HPHS students participated in approximately 2,764 course exams with the highest participation rates in English Language Compositions and English Literature Composition.

Success on an AP exam is defined as earning an exam score of 3 or higher, which represents the score point that research finds predictive for college success and college graduation. HPISD has an average AP score of 3.88 and has recognized 4,841 AP Scholar Awards since 2011.
