Three HPHS programs head to state

Tennis team heads to state tournament after regional final win

Tennis Send Off The Scots tennis team made its 34th straight appearance at the state tournament this morning Oct. 28 after winning the UIL 5A Region II tournament last week. HP defeated Frisco Lebanon Trail 11-2 in the regional final to secure a spot in the state tournament, following a win over a very tough Frisco Independence team 10-5 in the regional semifinal round Oct. 21.

The Scots are at Texas A&M for their 5A state semifinal round match against Katy Jordan scheduled for 8 a.m. today. The 5A final will be held at 8 a.m. Friday, Oct. 29. Click here for the state tournament brackets. Watch the Tennis State Bound send-off event on the HPISD Facebook page here

UPDATE: Scots tennis wins state semifinal match, advances to final match

The Scots tennis team defeated Katy Jordan 11-2 today Oct. 28 in the UIL 5A State semifinal match. HP will face Abilene Wylie in the final round at 8 a.m. tomorrow Oct. 29 at Texas A&M in College Station, in their quest for their sixth consecutive state title, and their state-record 22nd overall.

Highlander Band continues winning streak, heads to state marching contest

The award-winning Highlander Band continued its winning streak with another outstanding performance of the band’s “Sugar Rush” show Oct. 23 at the 5A Area Finals UIL marching contest. After earning a first division rating at Region, the Highlander Band placed 1st in both prelims and finals out of the 12 bands attending the contest. This earned them one of the three coveted spots to advance to the UIL State Marching Band Championship Contest Nov. 1-2 in San Antonio.

The band’s journey to state includes earning the title of Grand Champion at the McKinney Marching Invitational where they competed alongside 17 local band programs. At that contest, HPHS earned first place overall in the preliminary competition and first place overall in finals before being named the contest’s Grand Champion. The accolades didn’t end there. The Highlander Band also swept all caption awards for prelims and finals, recognized for Best Color Guard, Best Percussion, Best Music and Best Visual.

At the 5A Regional UIL competition Oct. 18, the Highlander Band earned all First Division ratings from a panel of three judges all awarded the band's "Sugar Rush" show with a "1" rating, which is the highest possible score a band can earn at the regional competition.

 

Girls cross country team Places 2nd at Regional meet, qualifying for state

Cross CountryThe Lady Scots cross country varsity team placed second out of 23 teams at the UIL Region II-5A Championship Meet Oct. 26 and qualified to race at the State Championship Meet Nov. 5. 

The team was led by junior Charlotte Hudson who placed fifth in the field of 172 runners with a time of 19:07.01. Close behind was junior Sara Cavey who placed eighth with a time of 19:10.13. Sophomore Kayla Dickerson placed 15th (19:40.40), junior Grace Hathaway placed 16th (19:43.97), senior captain Alli Grace Ott placed 25th (20:00.05), freshman Ellie Preston placed 33rd (20:24.25) and sophomore Ashley Goldman placed 35th (20:30.60). Click here for complete HP results.

The 5A girls 5K race will begin at 11:20 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Click here for maps and directions

Before advancing to Regionals, the Lady Scots cross country varsity team won the 13-5A District Championship for the 43rd time in 48 years Oct. 14 at Myers Park in McKinney. Junior Sara Cavey led the team, winning the individual championship with a time of 19:09.3. Also finishing in the top 10, junior Grace Hathaway was the bronze medalist with a time of 19:34.3 (a new course personal record), senior captain Alli Grace Ott placed fourth (19:38.2 – a new course personal record), junior Charlotte Hudson placed fifth (19:42.9), sophomore Ashley Goldman placed seventh (20:21.7 – a new course personal record) and freshman Samantha Meck placed 10th (20:44.9 - a new course personal record). The Lady Scots also won the district championship in the JV division. Sophomore Rylie Galanos won her second straight individual district title with a time of 21:17.0 (a new course personal record), freshman Varsha Ravi placed second, freshman Mary Katherine Diehl placed third (new course personal record), freshman Reese Preston placed fourth (new course personal record), and sophomore Katie Taulbee placed fifth. Rounding out the top seven runners for the team were senior Ava Murphy who placed sixth and senior captain Scarlett Randall who placed seventh (a new course personal record).
