Teachers and staff share message of thanks

HPISD teachers and staff will receive a compensation increase for each of the next three years, thanks to the overwhelming approval (approx. 77%-22%, unofficial final cumulative results) of the Golden Penny Election held Nov. 2. District voters approved the proposition authorizing the school district to access 4 “golden pennies,” which are not subject to recapture by the State of Texas, to supplement the school district’s budget to address staff compensation.

HPISD staff has always known that they have the support of the community. With the challenges of the last year and a half, the results of the election send an even more powerful statement of support to each HPISD team member. The district thanks the community for demonstrating its commitment to excellence in HP schools with this vote of confidence. "It was impressive to see how many people voted," Armstrong Head Custodian Charles Branch said. "To have more than 70 percent say 'yes' blew me away and spoke to me that they voted with their hearts in support of staff. We are so appreciative."

Even with the approval of the golden pennies, property tax rates for HPISD homeowners will decrease to a five-year low. To read the district's full election results statement, click here.
