Students from Highland Park Middle School and McCulloch Intermediate entered essays to the annual Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge Youth Essay Contest. This year’s topic was "What happens when a community no longer respects private property?" Students from across the nation participate in the essay contest and nine entries from HPISD were awarded with a George Washington Medal.
The George Washington Medal award winners from HPISD are:

- Matthew Martinelli, 8th grade
- Rebecca Stanwood, 8th grade
- Allie Vandermosten, 8th grade
- Pasha Zahedi, 8th grade
- Brooke Myers, 8th grade
- Sophie Ghobriel, 9th grade
Winners will receive their medal at a Nov. 8 awards dinner hosted by the Dallas Area Chapter of the Freedoms Foundation. Teachers whose students received awards are Asiya Roland, Katrina Hallman and Julie Grigsby.
