HPISD students capture 3 first place wins at state competition

The HPHS math and science teams won the State Sweepstakes and took first place in Science, first place in Math, third place in Number Sense, and sixth place in Calculator in the 5A division of the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association (TMSCA) State Championship Meet March 19 in San Antonio.
Individual winners included:  
 
Mathematics
  • 9th Grade - Andrew Li 
  • 12th Grade - Justin Li
 
Science
  • 10th Grade - Luke Ting
  • 11th Grade - Michelle Xing
  • 12th Grade - Justin Li
 
Justin Li also won the Top Physics and Top Gun Awards, and Luke Ting won Top Biology and Top Chemistry.

The math team practices is coached by HPHS math teacher Andy Speir, and the science team is coached HPHS chemistry teacher Wenzen Chuang. Chuang also serves as the High School Director on the TMSCA Executive Board.  
 
The team would like to thank the parents and community members who generously donated their time and money to the HP Academic Scots Booster Club who provided partial funding for the teams. 
 
In a separate competition series, HPHS students participated in the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) program hosted by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). AMC educates students with problem-solving and analytical skills needed for future careers in an innovative society. Students in 10th grade and below can participate in AMC 10. Top performers move on to the next level, American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME). Two HP students, ninth-grader Andrew Li and 10th-grader Ryan Dong are among the 300 students in AMC 10 and AIME invited to participate in the United States of America Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO) March 22-23.
