The Boone Elementary third-grade Destination Imagination (DI) team is advancing to compete at the national Globals22 competition May 21-24 in Kansas City, Missouri. The team won in the Engineering Challenge category at the Lone Star Finals State Tournament.
The state competition included two stages consisting of an engineering central challenge and an instant challenge. For the central challenge, Boone students presented the same material they developed for the regional tournament. The instant challenge, however, is revealed to competitors at the tournament. For this phase of the competition, teams were given eight minutes to present a challenge. They are then judged on their ability to demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills using limited provided materials.
This year’s instant challenge was entitled “Roll with It.” Teams were required to present within an eight-minute time constraint the following five components:
- Design and build a structure that could roll down a ramp and collide with a structure tester.
- Test the structure by placing weights on it.
- Create and present a story (complete with homemade costumes and sets) about how a character becomes a legend.
- Design and build a rotating object.
- Create and present two Team Choice Elements that show off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents.
The Boone third-grade DI team is named the Dragons. Members of the team are in Atisha Manhas’s class. Team members are Emily Kerr, Alina Manha, Liam Roslund, Olivia Stanwood, Caleb Vagefi, Tara Vaughn, and James Yen.
