HPMS students win statewide literature contest

Two eighth-grade HPMS students won first and second place in the 2021-2022 Level 2 Letters About Literature Texas contest for Grades 7-8. Kaden Rice won first place and second place went to Elaine Carté-Engel.

Hundreds of Texas students participated in the statewide event sponsored by the Texas Library and Archives Foundation. This annual competition invites fourth through 12th-grade students to select a book, book series, essay, play, poem, short story or speech that touched their lives and then write a letter to its author—living or dead. The letters are about how that writer’s words affected them or changed their worldview.

Rice wrote to author Robin Benway about the book “Far from the Tree” and Carté-Engel wrote to Pam Muñoz Ryan, author of “Echo.” As a first-place winner, Rice will receive a $100 cash prize. She will also be honored at the 2022 Texas Library Association Conference next week.
